To mark International Women’s Day, we’re shining the spotlight on Kip&Co, the women’s and kids’ fashion and lifestyle brand set on bringing colour and joy to your world in a sustainable way. Founded by sisters Kate Heppell and Hayley Pannekoecke and their friend Alex McCabe, we asked the Kip&Co team to share the story of their female-led business.
What brought you all together?
“Kate and I (Alex) were at university together and Hayley is Kate’s sister, so the friendship between the three really started when we were about 18… over two decades ago now! We each had varied careers, collectively covering off naturopathy, accounting, legal, communications, business management, and owning a small business! When we reached our late 20s, we were eager for a challenge that was our very own. We threw business ideas around for a year or so, before we landed on the idea of Kip&Co. I think the thing we had in common was tenacity and self belief.”

What is the upside of having three strong female founders behind the brand?
“There’s a very different energy in a female-led business. I’ve always loved having male colleagues too, but there’s something about the practical, supportive, and no-BS way we approach life that is really incredible.”
What tips would you recommend to others for achieving their career goals?
“We all tried lots of different careers, which I think helped us bring a really rounded view to starting the business. We’ve worked with some great formal and informal mentors along the way, but we are also just open to learning something from anyone. We’re never too precious to muck in and learn a new skill from the ground up. We also love a good podcast – LadyBrains is a fave.”
Why do you celebrate International Women’s Day?
“We love IWD – it’s an important moment to pause and reflect on how far we have come in the pursuit of equality, and a reminder of how far we have to go. This year’s theme is break the bias – we have of course experienced our own challenges in our careers because of our gender. We’re passionate about creating a brand that breaks the bias, and want to celebrate and lift up other women.”
How do your ‘Conscious Collaborations’ work?
“We’ve had a very special partnership with the Babbarra Women’s Centre in Maningrida, Arnhem Land. The centre was initially created as a safe space for women, and has now grown into a creative hub that enables future enterprises to support healthy and sustainable livelihoods. The collaboration was best practice, with 50% of profits going back to Babbarra, to support their initiatives. It was important that the licence provided the artists with a true partnership, both in terms of profit and, importantly, in the development of the range itself. The agreement gave the artists key decision making in every step of the process.”
Why is sustainability a key focus for Kip&Co?
“We love a life lived to the full, but want it to be one that leaves the world better than we found it. We’ve made a personal commitment to minimise the harm to the planet in everything we do, and that means that sustainable and ethical considerations come first. We’re proudly carbon neutral. We’re part of the circular economy. We source responsible partners and sustainable fabrics. We use our voice to celebrate indigenous artists and we speak up when it matters. We’re not perfect but we are getting better every day, because it is the right thing to do.”
What do you hope that every woman and child feels when they reach for one of your pieces?
“Kip&Co is about a better way of living. It’s your best night’s sleep, a meal with loved ones that feeds your soul, it’s memories made from backyard adventures and global wandering. We hope this is an experience people have when they take home some Kip&Co, and that their homes are able to be as unique, colourful, and authentic as they are.”
