When it comes to high-end carrying solutions, no brand marries the worlds of fashion and industrial design with quite the same panache as côte&ciel.
Founded in Paris back in 2008, côte&ciel – which means ‘Coast and Sky’ – have established a firm footing in the realm of fashionable accessories thanks to their uncompromising vision. The brand has been tackling backpacks, slings, messengers, and unique hybrid pieces for over a decade now, expertly applying their keen focus on timeless monochromatic colourways, tough-as-nails fabrics, and unparalleled versatility. This season, the French bag experts are arguably offering up their cleanest pieces yet, employing rugged ballistic nylon and environmentally-friendly EcoYarn across signature silhouettes such as the clamshell-style Ems hybrid and compact Sormonne backpack.

Ems
Whereas most waist pack designs come in the form of your garden-variety fanny pack silhouette, the Ems is a completely different take on the typical waist pack. That’s because the versatile clamshell-style hybrid can be worn in its compact cube form or opened up to create a unique wraparound that’s even more accessible. And since it can be rocked around the waist or as a crossbody, it’s essentially four bags in one. The black ballistic nylon construction is the icing on the cake, and gives the hardwearing Ems a water-repellant finish that’s resistant to abrasion and tearing alike.
Isarau Small
At first glance, the Isarau Small looks like the familiar waist packs you know and love. However, the Isarau Small is packed full of additional features that put it at the pinnacle of modern-day waist packs. A more compact version of côte&ciel’s original Isarau, the appropriately named Isarau Small is packed full of pockets in a sleek 17cm x 37cm x 12cm package, making it the perfect go-to for all of your daily essentials. Inside are two lined main compartments, along with a dedicated device pocket that not only includes extra padding, but also has magnetic tab closure to keep your belongings extra safe. This particular version goes with a deep navy ballistic nylon finish, complete with the brand’s matte hardware, and understated leather branding badge.
Garonne
A quality briefcase is essential for transporting all your work-related valuables, and the Garonne is the epitome of stylish security. Featuring both fixed top and side haul handles, along with packable shoulder straps and a crossbody strap, the Garonne boasts a zip-around main compartment that fully opens to offer access to a padded laptop sleeve, and another internal zip pocket. Two more zippered pockets appear on the face of the exterior, while the back of the bag features a pass-through so that you can slip it over your suitcase handle for even easier transport. côte&ciel’s military-inspired water-, abrasion-, and tear-resistant ballistic nylon once again reigns supreme. Available in both black and navy options.
Oril Small
Deceptive simplicity is the name of the game for the Oril Small: the more compact version of côte&ciel’s signature backpack. Here, a padded rear compartment is designed to accommodate your laptop, while the front of the pack contains a duo of stacked compartments that feature two internal zip pockets, plus a unique zippered opening that allows the user to reach through the lower front and rear compartments for increased flexibility. All of this is protected by a clip-fastened flap that conceals yet another zip pocket that’s perfect for mobile phone storage. Lash points on the shoulder straps are a play on the ubiquitous MOLLE system, providing spots for carabiners and additional carrying options. This particular iteration of the bag also comes decked out in the French brand’s EcoYarn, which is sustainably made without sacrificing water-resistance. If there’s a better marriage of form and function in a backpack, we’re yet to see it.
Sormonne
Taking its name from the tranquil waters of a river in northeastern France, the Sormonne rounds out this season’s côte&ciel offerings at SneakerHub with another backpack-style alternative to the Oril Small. While the Sormonne and Oril Small are nearly the exact same size, the Sormonne is intended to bring ‘peace of mind to the organisationally challenged’. The interior compartment is home to both a padded laptop sleeve and mesh slip pocket, as well as pen slots and a concealed zipper closure. Two more flat-front pockets with hidden zips are available on the exterior, and are specifically designed to be accessible when the pack is worn over a single shoulder. Apropos of its source of inspiration, this Sormonne – like the Oril Small – is clad in EcoYarn, this time in deep navy blue.
