Sydney’s 5 Best Restaurants for Vegetarians

From local institutions to hidden gems, these spots are my go-to’s for the best meat-free meals in Sydney.

When it comes to eating out in Sydney, I’ve spent a good chunk of time (and money) trying out the local restaurants, street food, pub grub and bar snacks. My conclusion: our taste buds are spoilt for choice, especially if you’re a vegetarian. As meat-free diets enter the mainstream, more restaurants are quite literally catering to vegetarians. And we’ve all heard about the many environmental and health benefits behind eating a bit less meat, so kick off a good (read: delicious) habit with these five must-try destinations and food experiences.

1. Golden Lotus - Newtown
If I was going to try to change someone’s mind about what eating vegan means, this is where I’d start. Newtown’s very own institution, Golden Lotus features a completely vegan asian fusion menu. From their ‘duck’ pancakes, to shitaki mushroom salt and pepper ‘squid’, this place is an absolute must-do, even if you’re not vegetarian. I frequent this place just about every week, and I’m never disappointed.

2. Yulli’s - Surry Hills
Whether you’re on a date, catching up with friends for a midweek meal, or showing mum and dad some of the best local spots, Yulli’s does it all. Somehow finding the perfect balance between casual and intimate dining, the rotating vegetarian menu is one of the best in Sydney. Just make sure you try the Beetroot Tartare with Sweet Potato Crisps. Obsessed.

3. Bodhi - Sydney
Just across the road from Hyde Park, Bodhi’s is an inner city vegetarian dream. Its  menu caters for other dietary requirements too, including coeliac and nut allergies. Slightly fancier than the average, this is the place to go if you’re looking to impress. Try the pumpkin dumplings as a guaranteed table-pleaser, and the red bean puff for something a little sweeter.

4. The Imperial - Erskineville
While not technically a vegetarian restaurant, The Imperial offers a “vegetarian feast” which includes some of the most delicious vegan meals I’ve had in my life. Dine on jackfruit ‘crab’ cakes and coconut ‘ceviche’ while watching their nightly Drag & Dine Show, where Sydney’s most fabulous drag queens serenade on top of the bar and dance the night away.

5. Gigi’s - Newtown
If you’ve ever walked down King St around dinner time, you no doubt would’ve seen the line for Newtown’s vegan pizza hotspot. Trust me though — the line is worth it. Originally, Gigi’s was just your regular pizza bar, before they completely switched up their menu for vegan alternatives. My favourite is the cauliflower puree Cavolo pizza, and don’t skimp on the garlic bread.
