The Exercise This Aussie Sprinter Never Skips

Talking running with Bree Masters.

How did you first start out training to be a sprinter?
“I have been training as a sprinter for many years now – it all began when I was just six years old. My parents enrolled me into many sports as a child, which included Surf Lifesaving and athletics. As I grew up, I developed a huge passion for sprinting and at age 17, I decided to dedicate all my focus to it.

I moved from Sydney to the sunny Gold Coast in 2013 to pursue my career as a professional sprinter and to train with elite athletes and coaches. I am currently in training as an Olympic hopeful with dreams of racing at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games.”

How does it feel to represent Australia?
“It is a great feeling to represent Australia and to race in the green and gold. I have been successful in representing my country many times within Surf Life Saving. These will be moments I will remember forever. I now have future dreams and goals of wearing the green and gold and representing Australia in the sport of athletics.”

What’s the one technical thing everyone should know about running?
“When sprinting, you must remain on the balls of your feet and you must focus on being relaxed, as tension in the body can lead to poorer form and a less fluid running action.”

How often do you go through running shoes? And how many pairs do you have?
“I go through running shoes quite regularly! They are definitely my most used type of shoe for my lifestyle and I have different pairs to cater all my training needs. I can currently count 27 pairs in my closet.”

What exercise do you never skip when training?
“Warm up! I would never start a session without a thorough warm up that included all of my drills and stretches. I find it very important to prepare my body for the session, to ensure my body is ready to give 110% to every rep.”

What are your top tips for rest and recovery?
“Along with my weekly recovery of compression garments and ice baths, I always ensure I am completing the basic things that enhance my recovery process, such as water intake, nutrition and sleep! My body is my engine and food and water is my fuel. By focusing on my nutrition, water intake and sleep, it helps my body refuel, recover and repair for each training session.”

What do you eat the day of a race?
“For breakfast I will eat either two poached eggs and avocado on wholemeal toast, or oats topped with mixed berries, honey and peanut butter. When I am racing I usually snack on bananas, mixed nuts, True Protein bars or fruit puree sachets.”

What do you do to stay motivated when you’re not feeling your best?
“There are always moments where I am not feeling my best and I feel unmotivated, however I always take the time to remind myself of the goals and dreams I want to achieve and remember that no dream comes easy and the work must be done to get closer to achieving that goal. I also have a great coach and teammates who continually keep me motivated week in and week out.”
