Many a memory has been made wearing my ever-supportive and always reliable block heels – my party season favourites since day dot when I realised that I, in fact, am not made like other people who take to dainty heels with such ease and grace. No, I can’t strut and shimmy, let alone simply stand up, balancing atop pin-thin stilettos without stressed fingers searching for the nearest friend, random passer-by or closest stationary object to clutch onto for dear life. Block heels have always had my back, but now there’s a shoe on the market that might just be my new plus-one to all future party invites.
Wedge heels are stealing the shoe spotlight and for the exact same reasons why block heels have been my party wardrobe’s BFF – they’re strong, dependable, there to lift you up and simultaneously keep you grounded.

Unlike the casual, platform wedges we’re more familiar with, like wedge espadrilles and flatforms, new season designs are reviving serious nineties and noughties nostalgia. They’re a little sleeker, a little more luxe, and a lot less chunky than you’d imagine – think mules with low-profile toes, fine straps and minimalist silhouettes – a perfect match for slip dresses, satin midi skirts and everything else in our going-out wardrobe.
Yes, we’re gravitating toward these sweet styles like we did with every other throwback trend before them. But don’t worry, we won’t be dumping our block heel besties – they’ll always be in style and you’ll regret giving them the boot if you do – just if you’re looking to grow your shoe posse with more reliable styles, then try these beauties on for size.
