So, you’ve got your capsule wardrobe sorted. You’ve (finally) figured out what ‘season’ you are. Heck, you even remember the three words you chose last year. But there’s just *something* about building an outfit that still feels a bit blah? Enter the Wrong Shoe Theory.

Made viral by NY-based stylist and FashionTok fave Allison Bornstein, the Wrong Shoe Theory is all about creating a more interesting and intentional ensemble by deliberately choosing the ‘wrong’ shoe (AKA whatever shoe elicits the strongest reaction from parents and partners). While it might seem weird at first… That’s kinda the point. It gets easier, we promise! If getting dressed then picking your shoes while blindfolded sounds a bit extra, here’s 4 wrong shoe/right outfit pairings to get you started…
Thong Heels + Long Shorts
This Y2K favourite is back in a big way, and while you could wear your heeled thongs with handkerchief hems and halternecks, a Bermuda short strikes the perfect balance of boy-meets-girl. Look for shorts in tailored linen or clean-cut denim that finish just above the knee, and finish with a half-tucked shirt for a little extra polish.
Crocs + Feminine Skirt
There’s no escaping the Croc, so you might as well have a little fun with it. This season, we’re pairing this kidcore classic with the most femme skirts we can find – think tiered prairie skirts and slinky slips. It’s Weird Girl dressing at its comfiest, and we’re here for it. Bonus points for a baby tee and pointless belt – the preferred outfit of Lower East Side girlies everywhere.
Sneakers + Cocktail Dress
Remember when Kristen Stewart took off her Louboutin heels in the middle of the Cannes red carpet? Iconic. And while she might’ve gone barefoot that evening, we low-key have her to thank for making sneakers at a formal event a thing. Converse and Nike are go-tos for Stewart, but everything from Skechers to Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66s will work just well.
Mary Janes + Blokecore Basics
Just like French fries and ice cream, pairing the prettiest flats you own with a masculine silhouette doesn’t sound like it should work – but it does. A pair of Mary Janes or dainty slingback flats is the perfect foil for a football jersey or oversized t-shirt. Team with no-fuss denim or bike shorts to bridge the gap.
