What is The Uluru Statement From The Heart?
Issued in May 2017, the Uluru Statement from the Heart is an invitation from First Nations Peoples to “walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future”.
“It’s an important constitutional document that asks for First Nations Peoples to have a Voice on the laws and policies which affect them.”
The Statement is the result of 13 Regional Dialogues with First Nations communities around Australia, which culminated at Uluru in 2017.
It calls for a First Nations Voice to Parliament protected in the Australian Constitution. This provision would compel the Australian Government to have First Nations Peoples at the table. Enshrining a Voice in the Constitution would ensure lasting change for First Nations Peoples and all Australians. Read more about the Statement here.
Five years on, and we are significantly closer to a referendum which will enshrine a Voice to Parliament in the Constitution. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese made various election statements where he continuously committed to a referendum in Voice in his first term. A commitment he reaffirmed in the opening of his victory speech.
This promise, when enacted, will bring us a significant step closer to self-determination for First Peoples.
To spread awareness and support of the statement, THE ICONIC is proudly launching official merchandise of the Uluru Statement in an exclusive partnership with the Uluru Dialogue and Indigenous Law Centre, UNSW.
Why T-shirts?
“The Uluru merchandise is exciting because it acts as a key driver of conversations on the Uluru Statement and its reforms,” Allira Davis, Co-Chair of the Uluru Youth Dialogue says.
“The whole nation needs to understand what the Uluru Statement calls for and the process that led to its delivery to the Australian people in 2017. A conversation can be life-changing.”
Sally Scales, a proud Pitjantjatjara woman, renowned APY artist and member of the Uluru Dialogue leadership team, designed this year’s tee with family in mind and believes it represents a powerful message of support for a constitutionally enshrined Voice to Parliament.
“The inspiration behind the t-shirt was to include the artistic styles of my mother, my grandmother and myself to reflect the different techniques that flow through our generations,” Ms Scales said.
“What this also represents is the generational wisdom involved in progressing the Voice to Parliament. The Uluru Statement isn’t a new movement…it has been progressing for generations. I wanted that to come through in the shirt.”
The t-shirt, which features the words “Voice” and “Makarrata”, reflects the deliberate and specific process set out in the Uluru Statement – Voice, Treaty, and Truth through Makarrata.

So, what else can we do?
It’s important to start conversations. By wearing the Uluru Statement merch, not only are you showing your support, but you are also inspiring those who may not be aware of the Statement and the importance of a First Nations Voice to Parliament, enshrined in the Australian Constitution, to learn more. It can be a catalyst for them to ask questions, reflect, and ultimately act. It can inspire conversations with friends, family or even a stranger on the street. Every conversation has the chance to make an impact.
Awareness is a huge step. Wear your t-shirt proudly and commit to having a conversation with five people in your circle of friends and family, about the Uluru Statement and why supporting it is so important.
As Professor Megan Davis has said, “Australians can change the nation, walking with First Nations people. The Uluru Statement provides a sequenced and substantive roadmap to peace. We always use the word ‘reconciliation’ in Australia but many of our old people in the Dialogues said ‘It’s the wrong word as reconciliation suggests we were friends. But there’s been no treaty, we have never met'. The Uluru Statement is the beginning of this journey to address unfinished business. It’s time.”
