Why is it so important to not neglect your core?
“I can't stress how important it is to have a strong core, it's called ‘core’ for a reason – it's the centre of your body. The reasons it’s so important?

"Having core strength improves your posture which is great if you're hunched over your computer or phone all day.

"Building on your core strength improves performance within other sports. A lot of professional athletes do pilates (this works on your core) to improve their overall performance.

"It helps with stability and balance which reduces the risk of injury. Having a strong core prevents lower back issues, and it makes you more mindful with your everyday tasks such as lifting.”

What are your favourite core-engaging exercises?
“Planks and all the plank variations!”

Should you work your core every single day?
“Everything in moderation. You should work on your core every time you work out or at least be mindful of it. You don't need to be doing hundreds of ab curls every time you exercise, instead, be mindful of activating your core so you're always in the correct spine position and in the correct form.

"Before I teach a pilates class, we spend the first few minutes activating our core and then throughout the whole class I will remind them about their core and to keep it switched on!”

Is there anything you can do while sitting at a desk?
“Yes! Posture – sit up straight at your desk, don't hunch and you can also activate your pelvic floor – your pelvic floor forms the base of your core. Next time you're at your desk (and reading this!) I want you to lift your pelvic floor (as if you need to go to the bathroom but you're going to hold it in) and hold for 10 seconds. Then relax. Do this five times.

"It's not about clenching, but more about lifting. By doing this you will be building on your core.”

What other tips would you give when you're working from home?
“I have a Garmin that aggressively tells me to move if I have sat down for too long! Go for a walk around the block. Another thing you can do is pop out for lunch, even if you're busy you will feel far more productive going outside for 20 minutes and then coming back to your desk with a calmer mind.”
