Tired of hair-raising Hollywood budgets, gratuitous CGI and derivative, zombified storylines? Let’s dig-up the reels of retro film, where creativity knew absolutely no bounds (but their budgets certainly did!).

From tongue-in-cheek Jaws spoofs to gratuitous bloodbaths created by Italy’s ‘Godfather of Gore’, we’ve summoned some of the most killer B-grade horror films from the 1950s to the 1980s.

Cue ominous, ear-screeching ‘70s synth soundtrack.

Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954)
‘A woman's beauty the bait that brought it out of its lair.’

Still a cult-favorite sci-fi horror, Jack Arnold’s Creature from the Black Lagoon rose from the depths in 1954.

Following a group of scientists that discover a mysterious, amphibious humanoid deep in the Amazon, the film was originally filmed in 3D, and required many of its viewers to wear 3D glasses in cinemas (3D glasses were polarising the film industry in the mid-1950s).

Featuring prescient underwater cinematography, the ‘Gill-Man’ continues to inspire filmmaking today, the monster most recently inspiring Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-nominated The Shape of Water (2017).

The Blob (1958)
‘Indescribable. Indestructible. Nothing can stop it!’

Is there anything more terrifying than unidentified, gelatinous ooze? Found inside a meteor that hits earth, the blob is made up of expanding, corrosive, alien materials and swallows everything in its path.

A classic at the 1950s drive-ins (anyone else feel like they were born in the wrong era?), many critics regarded the interstellar space ooze as a metaphor for Russian invasion, a paranoia that was running rampant in America during the ‘Red Scare’ (1947-1957).

Piranha (1978)
‘Sharks come alone. Piranhas come in thousands.’

It’s never good news when schools of flesh-eating, genetically modified piranha are set loose in a popular resort’s river.

It doesn’t take long for blood to fill the water in Joe Dante’s Piranha, the 1978 flick intended as a tongue-in-cheek Jaws (1975) spoof (Piranha was actually one of a bucketload of B-Grade horror films cashing-in on Steven Spielberg’s Long Island masterpiece. Still Dante’s Piranha is considered the most triumphant of them all).

Featuring a shallow plot, camp acting, and blood-soaked body count, Piranha still hooks splatter-nuts all these years later.

Zombie Flesh-Eaters/Zombi 2 (1979)
‘The dead are among us…’

Would any Halloween list be complete without legions of flesh-eating zombies?

The ‘Godfather of Gore’ Lucio Fulci dialled-up the violence in Zombie Flesh-Eaters, the 110-minute bloodbath ignominiously edited for Australian audiences (upon the VHS release).

Featuring a riotous zombie vs shark encounter and 70s synth track sure to permeate your dreams, Zombie Flesh-Eaters rivals the legendary work of horror alumni Herschell Gordon Lewis and George A. Romero.

The Evil Dead (1981)
‘Join us…’

Known for its cast of inexperienced actors, gallons of blood and belly laughs, The Evil Dead tells the story of five college students that unknowingly summons demons from ‘The Book of the Dead’.

How does one destroy said demons? By complete body dismemberment, of course.

Still regarded as one of the greatest horror films of all time, The Evil Dead squeezed every penny from its tight budget, with the film managing to gross an impressive $29.4 million worldwide. Still a cinematic touchstone for brazenly combining horror and humour, Sam Raimi’s splatter classic is one to watch with a solid group of friends (or fiends!).
