7 Biggest Brow Myths Debunked

Not sure if your brows should be sisters or twins? You’re about to find out.

The world of eyebrows can be a challenging one to navigate. With so many tips, tricks, dos and don’ts, how do you figure out what is actually factual and what is just a silly myth? Should your brows be sisters or twins? And should we really stop tweezing above the brow line?

Well, you’re about to find out as we break down seven of the beauty industry’s biggest brow myths and find out what’s true and what’s un-brow-lievable once and for all.

Keep reading to bust some of the biggest brow myths so you can finesse those arches once and for all.

Myth 1: Don’t wax! Your brows will grow back thicker

A lot of brow fiends out there will tell you that waxing your brows will make the hair grow back far thicker than if you thread or tweeze. And this is just simply not true.

The fact of the matter is that your hair will grow back the same way, regardless of how you remove it. The best thing about waxing, though, is that you can remove a lot of hair at the same time, meaning way better time efficiency. Plus, by getting rid of all that hair (including the little baby hairs), your brows will look far crisper and cleaner than if you tweezed.

Plus, it’s less painful than tweezing, and that’s enough said.

Myth 2: Both eyebrows should look exactly the same

They’re sisters, not identical twins. And trying to get them exactly the same is just going to take a ton of time. A ton of very frustrating time as you go back and forth between eyebrows until you’re left with no brows at all.

Well, maybe we’re being a little bit dramatic. But brows don’t need to be identical! No two brows are ever the same, for a whole variety of reasons. Getting professional eyebrow waxing and tinting can do wonders for getting your brows to look nice and symmetrical and, if not, brow products are your best friends for making those sisters look fuller and nicely shaped. We love Benefit Gimme Brow+ for creating fuller-looking brows.

Myth 3: Brows need to match your hair colour

Tell that to Cara Delevingne. No, but in all seriousness, it depends on the kind of look you want. They generally say that making your brows a shade darker than your natural hair colour is the way to go, but if you’re after something a bit more dramatic then why not go darker. Just look to blondes with darker brows like Florence Pugh, Gwen Stefani and Emma Stone in her blonde era.

Myth 4: NEVER tweeze above the brow line

This one is not entirely true. While it’s a good idea to shape from below, getting rid of some of those hairy outliers above the brow can be great in emphasising your brows. Just don’t get too close to the actual brow, or you might start looking a bit expressionless.

Myth 5: If you over-pluck you’ve ruined your brows forever

We’ve all been there. We got a little too feisty with those tweezers and kept saying “Just one more hair” and then ended up with brows that are way too thin. Everybody loves to say that once you’ve over-plucked, your hair follicles are damaged forever. And that’s just simply not true. Yes, your hair follicles can be damaged from overplucking, but if you put the tweezers down for a few weeks, your brow hairs will grow back – we promise! In the meantime, you can up your makeup game and become a pro at filling in your brows with a pencil, gel, pomade… whatever works for you.

Myth 6: The same brow shape works for everyone

Everybody is different, which means that everybody has a different face shape and different features. So not all brow shapes will work for everybody. Understanding your face shape and finding a brow shape that works for you is the best way to go.

Myth 7: Brow pencils are the best way to fill in your brows

Look, eyebrow pencils have a time and place. But it’s definitely not the only way to fill in your brows these days. Wax, powder and gel products are all great options for perfecting your arches. Everybody is different – which means that if a product works perfectly for your friend, it may not work the same for you.

So what are the rules?

There really aren’t any. Sure, there are best practices when it comes to eyebrow maintenance, but the most important thing about brows is that they make you feel confident. Maybe that means thin and angular eyebrows. Maybe that means thick, bushy natural brows. Maybe that means darker, bold, fierce brows.

Sometimes, it helps to seek out the experts, too. They can help you navigate the world of eyebrows and find your perfect size, shape, and colour. We recommend visiting your local Benefit Brow Bar and consulting with one of their qualified brow experts.
