Born in a little town called Ladysmith on Vancouver Island, Canada, Anderson’s seemingly-fairytale rise to stardom made her one of the most iconic faces of 90s Americana. From being spotted on the Jumbotron at a BC Lions football game, to her breakout Playboy cover, career-defining role as lifeguard CJ Parker in Baywatch, and tumultuous marriage to Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee, Anderson’s name was never far from the headlines, for better or worse.
In a post Me Too era, much has been said about the media’s treatment of Anderson; how a first-of-its-kind celebrity scandal destroyed her career and reputation irrevocably. And while she definitively denounced the 2020 drama miniseries Pam & Tommy, she’s telling her story her way in the newly-dropped Netflix documentary Pamela, a love story.
A mix of home footage lifted from hand-scrawled VHS tapes, personal reflections from a lifetime’s worth of journals and present-day musings combine to tell Pamela’s story in her own words. From her turbulent childhood through to the traumatic events of the mid-90s, her ongoing activism work and deep-seated love of life’s simpler pleasures (the perfect veggie burger, among them), she reflects on it all with nuance, positivity and a particular brand of self-deprecating humour that’s impossible to not fall in love with.
Whether it’s a reminder to journal more; to dress fabulously at any age; to stay true to what you believe in; to be a hopeless romantic; or to embrace life with open arms, we can all learn a thing or two from Pam.
Pamela, a love story is streaming now on Netflix, and we’re moodboarding her signature 90s style too.
