Dear Frances: The Perfect Shoes For An Everlasting Capsule Wardrobe

Italian-made footwear with a slow fashion mindset? Say no more.

When it comes to shoes, it’s easy to want them all – especially when new trends pop up seemingly every second – but that’s exactly the mindset Jane Frances wants to change. As the founder and creative director behind luxury footwear label Dear Frances, Jane has developed the brand with slow fashion as the focus.

Now available at THE ICONIC, we asked Jane to share which Dear Frances shoes she wears the most, why slowing down the fashion cycle is so important, and what she makes of current fashion trends.

A lot of high-profile celebrities love your shoes – including Margot Robbie, Hailey Bieber and Selena Gomez – do you ever design pieces with a particular person in mind?
Certainly with the Dear Frances woman in mind, but never with one particular person or celebrity in mind. For me, it’s so important to design collections that speak to our customer and the lifestyle that she leads. The Dear Frances woman is independent and confident and she has a clear sense of self. She is always evolving, just as we are, which is why I love keeping an open dialogue with our customers. Hearing and listening to their feedback and talking with them about what we are working on is not only enjoyable but it helps us to move forward together each season.

Why is slowing the fashion cycle a key focus for the brand?
The essence of Dear Frances’ sustainable approach is our desire to slow fashion down by focusing on investment pieces that can be worn time and again, season after season. We strongly believe in reverting back to quality and long lasting styles with ethical material choices, that you are proud to keep in your wardrobe. I think there is something to be said for having a classic wardrobe that's edited just right so you know what to reach for each day. This is the most straightforward and practical approach to minimising waste and increasing the integrity of our fashion choices.

Your core collection is designed to complement a classic wardrobe – what does your version of a classic wardrobe look like?
A classic wardrobe offers clarity. It holds high quality pieces that will be kept for years and passed to others once replaced. It should be centred around investment classics that can be mixed and layered each season. I find buying high quality classics makes dressing for my personal style so much easier.

What are the Dear Frances shoes you wear the most and how do they make you feel?
We just launched a new loafer called ‘Joss’ and with a smooth leather upper and grounding rubber sole, it’s the perfect mix of modern and classic. This style is chic and practical and I love that I can wear them all day no matter the weather. In summer, I live in our Tye Slides. They are the most comfortable pair of shoes I own and love how effortless they are but they still feel polished to a certain degree.

What do you hope other women feel when they reach for your shoes?
Confident and comfortable.

In a world where ‘recession-core’ is now a trend, what makes Dear Frances shoes a smart investment?
Investments should be timeless and whilst we design for modern women, trends don’t feature heavily in our collections. What we can learn from years of the trend cycle is that it creates never-ending pressure to keep-up and consume products at a rate that is clearly not sustainable. There is something calming about stepping back from this cycle of trends and consumption. Investing in quality classics that are designed to last – pieces that will form the building blocks of a minimalist wardrobe – and therefore buying less, is at the heart of what we do.

And finally, you’ve previously spoken about drawing inspiration from architecture and furniture design, have you ever considered branching out to other areas of design? Bags or furniture perhaps?
Yes! I enjoy so many different areas of design and would love to explore new ranges for Dear Frances. We actually have an exciting project in the works this year, which I can’t wait to share with everyone very soon!
