Lipstick is one of the most powerful products in your beauty kit to use if you’re wanting to make a statement with your Christmas makeup look. Seriously, nothing beats a slick of bright red lipstick to brighten up your mood, not to mention your outfit, and we think it’s essential to have a few options in your arsenal to pick from. With so many shades on the market, it can feel overwhelming picking *the* perfect colour, so we’ve pulled together some tips to keep in mind the next time you’re shopping for a new lippie.

How to Figure out your skin tone

The words ‘skin tone’ get thrown around in beauty stories a lot, but what does it *actually* mean?! Well, there are three types of skin tones out there: warm, neutral and cool. Those with a warm skin tone typically have green veins at their wrists, whereas those with a cool skin tone will have blue veins at their wrists. If you have a mix of green *and* blue veins, it could mean that you have a neutral skin tone - one that is not quite warm, and not quite cool.

If you have a warm skin tone:
Those with warm undertones in their skin can wear lippies with an orange or red base, such as M.A.C Matte Lipstick in Lady Danger, Giorgio Armani Beauty Lip Power in 401 Passione or Ere Perez Wild Pansy Tinted Lipbar in Life.

If you have a cool skin tone:
Want to show your cool skin tone in the best light? Go with lipsticks with a blue or green base like M.A.C Ruby Woo, Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté Shine Lipstick in Rouge Studio or Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Color in Soft Berry.

If you have a neutral skin tone:
Any lipstick mentioned in this story will suit you just fine!

Try it on

Still not sure if a colour will suit you? The best way to see if something will look good against your skin tone is to try it on. Instead of running to the shops, you can actually try on a lippie virtually on your phone. Just open The Iconic app, click Shop > Lips > Lipstick, and press on Try On at the bottom right corner of your screen. From there, you can pick from heaps of different products and shades so you can see for yourself if something is right for you.
