We’ve seen plenty of beauty trends come and go this year. From chlorophyll water to soap brows, and if you were on TikTok at any point in 2021, chances are you’ve tried at least one viral beauty trend. The latest trend to take TikTok’s beauty community by storm is ‘clean look’ makeup, a modern update on no-makeup makeup. Think of Hailey Bieber, Zendaya and Rosie Huntington-Whitely as your clean look ambassadors.
Rather than heavily sculpting and concealing your features, the clean look is all about looking effortlessly polished and ‘expensive’. As though you’ve spent your life savings on achieving great skin and hair through expensive facial treatments and hair appointments (we wish).
Although the clean look is designed to look effortless, it does require some serious effort to pull off.

How to create clean look makeup
Skin tint + concealer
The first and most important step is to swap out your foundation for a sheer skin tint, tinted moisturiser or BB cream. Yes, this means you’re sacrificing on coverage, but that’s the whole point. It’s supposed to look like your real skin. But don’t panic if you’ve got pigmentation or uneven skin tone, concealer is very much approved for the clean look. Apply a touch of concealer under the eye area and anywhere else you desire more coverage.
Cream blush
Cream products are key for the clean look as they’ll leave your complexion looking glowy and fresh. Blend a small amount of cream blush onto the apples of your cheeks and blend upwards towards the tail-end of your brows.
Bronzer
While there is no heavy sculpting when it comes to the clean look, there is a small amount of contouring required – I promise it’s beginner-friendly! Use a makeup brush to blend a small amount of bronzer upwards, underneath your cheekbones and along your jawline. You can contour your nose as well by using a small concealer or eyeshadow brush.
Brushed-up brows
Fill in any sparse areas of your brows with a brow pencil, then use a brow gel to brush your brows upwards. If your arches are on the thin side, look for a brow gel that contains microfibres that will create natural-looking fullness.
Lip tint
Kick lipstick to the curb and try a subtle, glossy tint instead. Lip tints are incredibly flattering and they’ll keep your lips looking luscious and hydrated for hours.
Brown eyeliner
This step is optional, but it’s a great way to take the look from day to night. Add some brown liner along your lash line and flick it out to give a winged effect. Take a Q-tip and some concealer to clean up the wing so that it’s even on both sides – remember, the clean look is all about precision.
Mascara
Finally, coat your lashes with a slick or two of mascara and presto, you’ve finished off your clean look makeup.
