The last time I visited my mum she asked if I still wanted my choker of giant peacock feathers I once loved. I used to wear it as a statement, against a plain black tube top (didn’t want to go too over the top, after all, the plumage was the show-stopper). The answer was a firm no. But the internet is all achatter about these nostalgic accessories – do we hear the rumblings of a comeback?
We’ve all tried to forget the vice statement necklaces had us in in the 2010s. Everyone was hooked – and I mean everyone. A quick Google search will throw up visuals of Rihanna, Blake Lively, Reese Witherspoon, Cameron Diaz collared by an unnecessarily large neck piece. J Crew’s Jenna Lyons was the ultimate peddler of the statement necklace, in bright nearly-neons combined with chunky crystals. Extra points for some kind of geometric enamel.

We wore them everywhere. They were business-casual over a t-shirt teamed with a blazer. In fact t-shirts, tank tops and evening dresses were preferred.
This caption couldn’t be more accurate: “In 2012 I would have worn a necklace like this to help a friend move.”

We’re not the only ones remembering the trend with a blend of cringe mixed with nostalgia. Millennials on TikTok are digging out their old favourites and trying them on for their followers, clearly tempted to revive some designs and rightly leave others in the dust.

So while we’re laughing at one of the era’s biggest trends, there’s clearly a fondness for the statement necklace that makes us toy with trying one over a t-shirt in the office next week. For now it’s safer, chicer and more modern to stick with our beloved delicate jewellery that’s been our go-to for the last few years. Strands of super fine chain, earlobe adornments – plural – and stacked rings.
Anything but the supersized crystals or god forbid, the hinged owl.
