For the final instalment of our four-part series Lessons in Love, we ask ‘what’s your love language?’. As Valentine’s Day draws near, we ask each couple to share how they show their love for each other, and it’s the little things that reign supreme. Maria says the way to Anthony’s heart is via his stomach, Dawn and James like to keep things playful, and for Keiren and Alistair, it’s the simple gestures that say the most.
How do you show your love?
Maria & Anthony
“My cooking! He definitely married me for my cooking,” laughs Maria, who also likes to cuddle Anthony as a sign of her affection.
“I try to help out where I think I can, but Maria's is a little bit reluctant to have me in the kitchen, or in any place she's cleaning up for that matter,” says Anthony, who shows his love through acts of service. “She’s always busy doing something and when I try to help she says ‘Go away, you're not doing it properly!’,” he laughs.
Dawn & James
“I iron his work shirts, and I tease him, and I insist on kissing him,” says Dawn when asked how she shows her love for James on a daily basis.
“And I show my love by not waking her up to iron my shirts!” says James.
Being playful is the couple’s mutual love language. “We enjoy making stuff up and laughing at it and James tells me crazy stories and I find them hilarious. I probably am the only person who finds him incredibly funny, and it has been like that since I met him,” says Dawn
“I like that she laughs so much,” adds James, as they both crack up laughing about nothing in particular.
Keiren & Alistair
For Keiren and Alistair, they show their love by looking out for each other and looking after each other with small gestures every day.
“I start with taking Al a cup of tea in bed and it goes from there,” says Keiren. “I'm a very early riser, so I like to get up and get the day started. I make a big pot every morning and take him a cup so he can read the newspaper in bed or catch up on emails. Oh, I also do all the laundry!”
Even after 20 years together, Alistair likes the element of surprise. “I like to do things that Keiren is not expecting,” he says.
“Like laundry sometimes!” Keiren interjects.
“Haha, does that have to keep coming up? Okay. I like to surprise him with something like a meal or a simple gesture – anything he's not expecting. And yes, Keiren does do all the cleaning!” chuckles Alistair.
