There are no rules when it comes to makeup – from everyday ritual to creative self-expression, it’s all about following your heart and what makes you feel your best. But every season, key looks come onto our radar that we collectively can’t wait to try. So if you’re ready to retire your razor-sharp liner and warm tones in favour of something fresh, listen up. We tapped Cat Quinn, M·A·C Global Trend Executive Director (AKA the ‘trend whisperer’ on TikTok), for her take on the makeup trends set to dominate in 2023.
'90s Nudes
'90s Nudes
“After years of warm, all-gold everything, expect a major shift toward cool-toned nudes reminiscent of the 90s and supermodels like Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell. For lips, reach for classics like M·A·C Lip Pencils in Cork, Stripdown, and Oak topped with your favourite frosty nude lipstick. On eyes, I love soft greys (M·A·C Eye Shadow in Cozy Grey), sooty charcoal in the crease (M·A·C Eye Shadow in Greystone or Print), and heavy coal in the lash line (M·A·C Eye Shadow in Carbon). It’s classic, ‘pretty’ makeup that looks good on everyone.”
Soft Goth
Soft Goth
“You can thank Wednesday Addams for the explosion of the soft goth look globally, but it was brewing long before that at shows like Versace, Dsquared2, and Burberry. Born out of the goth subculture (which emerged out of goth rock in the early 80s and went more mainstream in the 90s), soft goth is a more casual take that incorporates shades like burgundy, cool brown, and plum. M·A·C. Lip Pencil in Nightmoth is a classic goth-girl shade, and I’m so excited it’s having its moment again.”
Copper
Copper
“It feels like every celebrity dyed their hair copper this year, and we all collectively discovered just how beautiful this rich, penny shade looks against all skin tones. Expect to see a lot of people experiment with the hue in their makeup. I’ve already seen celebs like Maude Apatow, Meghan Markle, Karlie Kloss and more wearing rich, pigmented, smoked-out shades of copper eyeshadow. I love M·A·C Dazzleshadow in Couture Copper and Dazzleshadow Liquid in Blinking Brilliant.”
Smoky Mauve
Smoky Mauve
“Between the rise of cool-toned makeup, sweet balletcore, and purple makeup (including the purple blush trend), a lot of consumers will land on universally flattering mauve. It’s the most beautiful tone on eyes, lips, and cheeks and makes for a romantic new neutral. Emily Cooper wears a ton of mauve lipstick tones on Emily in Paris this season, and I expect a lot of people to copy her look. You can’t go wrong with M·A·C Lipstick in Mehr. It’s a classic for a reason!”
Glowstack
Glowstack
“We’ve seen skin cycling and sandwiching, and in 2023 it will all be about stacking. Glowstack is a way to stack your products for the most gorgeous natural multidimensional glow. I love stacking M·A·C Studio Radiance Primer, then M·A·C. Studio Radiance Foundation, then more Studio Radiance on top of that followed by Strobe Cream. M·A·C’s primers and skincare products are designed to work with makeup, so there is no pilling or separating – you can stack to your heart’s content.”
