We didn't think we'd see things come full circle so soon, but in 2023, like it or lump it, all things black are well and truly back. Fuelled partly by Jenna Ortega's star-making turn in the Netflix hit series Wednesday, and partly by the current wave of semi-ironic noughties nostalgia that's taking over Gen-Z fashion, the kids are once again returning to an aesthetic that most millennials look back at with nothing but pure embarrassment.

And it's not just the kids channelling our much-suppressed inner emo. True to form, high fashion also set the stage for something of a goth revival last year. Dior, Louis Vuitton, Versace and Rick Owens all showed pieces with a noticeable gothic theme last year, while designers like Celine and Saint Laurent, who both thrived during the emo/indie sleaze heyday of the late 2000s, have made clear that skinny jeans and monochrome get-ups are well and truly back again. Celebrities likewise have embraced black, lace, sheer pieces and chunky boots with wilful abandon.
But how do you dip your toe back into the soft goth waters without digging out your old iPod and throwing yourself fully back into the emo way of life? Here are some unisex options to invest in.
Romper Stomper boots
Chunky black work boots, particularly the style popularised by the likes of Dr. Martens, have been central to all manner of angsty teen subcultures for decades, from punk to grunge and eventually the emo aesthetic that emerged from both of them. As such, they never really go out of style, and while your soft goth phase might be short lived, a good pair of boots is almost guaranteed to remain relevant no matter what direction your wardrobe takes.
Symbolic jewellery
Gothic accessories have always been, well, rather gothic in the imagery they portray, and adding a chunky chain or a blinged-out skull here or there is a great way to add a little gothic twist to any style of outfit.
Metal tees
Another timeless essential, the goth revival means it's never been cooler to wear the musical allegiances you once so passionately swore on your sleeve. Either that or you could just rock a Metallica tee like everyone else.
Black denim
Whether worn in jacket form or in the form-fitting ripped version we've all come to synonymise with the goth subculture, raggedy monochrome denim is a soft-gotch essential. Better yet, pair the two together for a Canadian tuxedo that would make Robert Smith himself proud.
