A Local’s Guide To Summer In Darwin

Model and actress Magnolia Maymuru shares her Snapshot of Summer.

There’s a near-irresistible sense of freedom that comes with summer. It’s an adventure you can feel in the warm air and in the memories of summers past...

This season, we asked Australian creatives – models, photographers and those we admire – to share a snapshot of their summer, and all that makes it special.

Having recently moved to Darwin from her hometown of Yirrkala in Arnhem Land, model and actress Magnolia Maymuru shares her favourite Darwin destinations for summer, including Buley Rock Pools (pictured), a stunning spot for swimming in Litchfield National Park.

“I used to study at the Batchelor Institute and Buley Rock Pools was a place that other students and I would visit often. I made lots of good memories there and friendships that have blessed me in many ways.”

“The Territory is the perfect place for summer; the beaches, people and beautiful sunsets here are so vibrant and mixed with stunning colours. Growing up I spent summer outbush a lot. Hunting, 4wheel driving, dancing and camping was a huge part of my life and still is. It has only gotten better living here.”

If you love to swim…
“I would totally send you off to Litchfield pools, Mataranka Thermal Pools and Rainbow Springs, Berry Springs and to Arnhem Land to check out some of our beautiful beaches.”

And to eat…
“I have 3 go-to’s for eating out here in Darwin – the Foreshore Cafe in Nightcliff, The Cool Spot in Fannie Bay, and the Salty Plum Cafe – the location is beautiful and the food is absolutely mouthwatering!”

And before you leave…
“I would recommend a trip to Litchfield National Park, an evening at Deck Chair Cinema, a stroll through Mindil Markets, an escape to Kakadu National Park, and a visit to Aboriginal Art Centres.”
