This International Women’s Day 2021, meet some of the women who make this company turn, be inspired by their career journeys, see how they ‘choose to challenge’ on the daily, and find out what empowers them.
"My career journey started at university – I studied Commerce/Law and, despite knowing the hard years of studies that were ahead, I made a commitment to fuse my interests in all things legal, creative and tech from day one. I was fortunate enough to undertake my practical legal training at Seven Network while at law school which really cemented that it is possible for a lawyer to work in a creative environment. Since graduating, I’ve spent the majority of my career specialising in commercial, corporate, e-commerce, brand management, and ultra high net-worth client matters predominantly working in-house as a lawyer within organisations across Australia, United Kingdom, United Arab Emirates and Scandinavia (but I’ve also spent some time in law firms and professional services... think Suits!).
"While there is no single moment that stands out above others, joining THE ICONIC as General Counsel three years ago is an absolute career highlight! The world I work in now is one where my passion for law, business, tech and fashion collide. It is so rare to have the opportunity to craft and shape a function from scratch, and I now lead a highly successful team who are charged with delivering the full ambit of THE ICONIC's Legal, Governance, Regulatory, Compliance and Company Secretariat function spanning all areas of the business including: Category Management, Technology, Operations, Marketing, Finance, Growth & Development, and People & Culture. Being appointed to the Executive team is also a career highlight – it is a real privilege to lead and serve in one of the coolest e-commerce companies in Australia and New Zealand, turbocharging and shaking up retail – dreaming big, every single day!
"I challenge myself by doing my absolute best with everything that comes my way. I’ve come to realise that, for me, doing my best looks different each day – knowing that in life I won’t always 'get it right' so I choose to challenge by being open to embracing new opportunities and experiences; being curious by learning, un-learning and re-learning along the way; and using my skills, knowledge and experience to mentor, give back to the community and lift others around me.
"There’s nothing more empowering than being able to get from A to B – comfortably and in style! Over the years I’ve discovered that I can’t live without a couple of wardrobe staples, pieces that can take me from the office to a more formal meeting on short notice, and also outfits that can take me from day to night. I've found that my go-to pieces are often good jeans; colour-block tops; structured blazers; patterned skirts/dresses; statement jewellery and also scarfs, often teamed with leather ankle boots, heels or classic ballet flats (although when I'm zipping around you will often see me in plimsolls or Converse Chuck Taylor All Stars!). I also love wearing colour – it keeps things fun and fresh, and lifts everyday pieces, and I feel empowered when I have the opportunity to support a mix of Australian and International brands.
"My career has mostly been fashion-focused. Alongside working part-time jobs in visual merchandising, waitressing and the fitness industry whilst at Uni doing a Bachelor Degree, I decided to intern at Elle magazine. After that, some of my job titles at various mags ranging from Dolly, Studio Collections, Cleo, Good Health, Cosmopolitan, Grazia and Fitness First, have included Editor’s PA, Picture Editor, Fashion and Beauty Writer, Beauty Editor, Style Editor, Fashion Editor and Fashion Director before then joining THE ICONIC as Head of Style.
"The best part about my work is definitely the travel. I pretty much travelled the world shooting fashion editorials, attending fashion weeks or beauty events. I feel blessed to have been able to do that and get paid for it.
"I believe that we can choose to be more positive people, choose to make the right decisions for ourselves and others, choose to treat everyone equally, and choose to be friendly and happy while doing it. I like the quote, “Opportunity is never lost, someone takes the one you miss” so I challenge myself to make sure I fit in exercise, family time or some social life before or after work every day, no exceptions.
"It’s the little things in my day that empower me. I feel strong and ready to do anything in a pair of combat boots. My go-to meeting outfit is an oversized blazer. A statement dress always makes me feel good. The book I read last year to keep me on top of my digital workload and life was Indistractable by Nir Eyal. I do an 8km walk every morning and F45 regularly so workout gear is key. Getting a good night’s sleep is essential, especially when I have 4.30am wake up calls. And for my mental health, I have started a new method to help me find my balance called KAAIAA – a practice that trains the 4 Pillars of Health (mental, physical, emotional and spiritual) using a dynamic combination of breath work, body work, meditation and integration."
"I’ve spent nearly a decade working with fashion companies to integrate sustainability into their day to day. It’s about ensuring that people are protected and environments are preserved from the impacts of our industry – we’ve come a long way but there is still so much more to do.
"Watching sustainability become a core part of THE ICONIC business agenda over the past few years has been incredible to see, and it’s not slowing down. Particularly in fashion, but businesses in general no longer get to decide whether environmental sustainability or human rights issues are relevant to them, addressing these are now an imperative part of being in business.
"No day is the same for us in sustainability, there is always a new challenge to overcome, an issue to solve or innovation to learn about. There is no room for complacency, it’s about always learning, growing and driving better outcomes for people and the planet.
"I love surrounding myself with things that have meaning to me and are special in their own way, whether it’s clothing made from materials that are kinder to the environment (like my AERE linen staples), supporting artists whose artwork fills my house or buying second-hand pieces I know have had a life before me – that, to me, is empowering."
"I consider myself a jack of all trades, I was never an individual who knew exactly what and where they wanted to be as an adult, and I don’t think there is anything wrong with that. During my career journey I did however dabble in the building industry, electrical appliance industry and then the fashion and e-comm industry, always working in operational functions inclusive of inventory management, warehousing, logistics and customer service. Through my experience, I identified that Operations is a meaningful, impactful and inspiring world and I can not have enough of it!
"Reaching my seven years at THE ICONIC is my career highlight. Originally when I started I led a team of approximately 20 staff in inbound operations and have since expanded my remit, role and team. I lead a team of close to 350 people across a range of functions, including Vendor Management, Inbound, Outbound, Inventory, workforce planning and Logistics and Delivery throughout the Fulfilment and Logistics space in operations. Not only leading and inspiring one of the most engaged fulfilment centre teams in Australia, but succeeding in this whilst improving our efficiencies and still providing an amazing customer experience.
"I believe if you really want something, you need to work for it. Nothing or no one else is a bigger barrier in life than yourself. Be confident, be resilient and have a humble approach to actions and decisions. As a full-time working mum and wife, who practices multi-tasking, planning and execution on a daily basis, I do everything with a smile, look at the bright side and remember, life is what you make of it, work hard but play harder. Outside of work, I like to go on bush walks, ride motorbikes and cruise the wonderful NSW waterways in my boat.
"I feel empowered wearing statement pieces, like a pop-colour coat and leopard print heels, mixed with comfortable staples, like the Levi’s black curve jeans which I can dress up or down. When I can’t wear that, the Sensori + Revitalizing & Brightening Eye Mousse is the next best thing."
"My career journey has taken me across the globe, from London to Sydney, and I love it! I have followed my passion for all things e-commerce for over ten years, working at Topshop HQ, Farfetch and now THE ICONIC.
"Every company I have had the opportunity to work at has been a career highlight, as you garner so much experience from different organisations, they always present unique challenges. Varying from different customer problems to an array of business goals and objectives.
"At THE ICONIC, working on VISUALISE was certainly a career highlight. VISUALISE is an augmented reality experience giving shoppers the opportunity to virtually try-on different style sneakers – all from the comfort of their home. As the Product Owner, I was responsible for the feature, working with an incredibly talented and dedicated bunch of people from inception to launch. I learnt so much along the way, which is a testament to the fact that we never stop learning and a growth mindset is a must to continually learn and develop as an individual.
"At work, pushing psychological safety to the next level is my daily challenge – I try to create the right climate through diversity, mindsets and behaviours so that I can act as a catalyst, enabling everyone in the squad to be their very best. Knowing that others feel supported in this way is what empowers me."
