Whether you’re trying to watch your bank account or looking to mix up your usual workout routine, running or jogging is one of the best (and most inexpensive) forms of exercise that is suitable for all fitness levels. When performed correctly, it can help burn calories and increase your fitness levels. Not only that, it’s also known to help to reduce stress, clear the mind, and improve your overall mental health.
But what if you’re not the biggest fan of running or jogging? We’re sharing our 6 favourite tips and tricks to help you get started (and keep going) for when you hit the pavement.
1. Plan ahead
As they say, “fail to plan, plan to fail”. If you are serious about running, and making this part of your weekly routine, make sure to plan ahead of time when and where you will be fitting in your run/jog, it’s the best way to keep yourself motivated and accountable.
2. Get the right gear
There’s nothing worse than wearing the wrong bra or sneakers when running. Find women's running shoes that provide overall support and comfort throughout your stride. Our choice? The Nike Pegasus 40 Premium Road Running Shoes. For us gals, searching for the right sports bra or crop is also crucial. The one we’re adding to cart is the adidas By Stella McCartney Trupace High Support Sports Bra that provides optimal support (as the name suggests) and features adjustable racer back straps plus more.
3. Stay hydrated
Chances are you’ll be sweating quite a bit throughout your run/jog - which is completely normal, so you’re going to want to keep your water bottle close by throughout your journey.
4. Accessorise
You never realise how important accessories are until you're mid-way through your run/jog and hair is falling in front of your face or you need something to carry your keys or phone in. Add training headbands such as the adidas Performance Training Headbands or 2XU Performance Visor to your ‘fit so you are keeping yourself protected and comfortable, and the Rec Gen Strap Bum Bag to hold all of the necessities.
5. Create a playlist
It’s a fact, a good playlist and headphones are the best motivators when completing any workout. Whether your vibe is techno or something more low-key, or even a podcast, find something that will keep you going and going. TIP: Spotify and Apple Music offer pre-made running playlists so if you need some inspo, these are your best bet.
6. Recover and reflect
Make sure you are cooling down after your run/jog. Bring down the pace with a brisk walk and remember to stretch for at least 5-10 minutes to help recover your muscles. Don’t forget to fuel your body with something healthy like a smoothie with your favourite protein powder or protein bar. Most importantly, embrace “runners high” and reflect on your run and be proud of your achievement and what you have accomplished, chances are this will encourage you to keep on going.
