If you’re anything like us, there’s a mental list of movies you’re definitely going to watch before the Oscars, before inevitably running out of time. So if you’re not 100% up to speed, seeing the arrivals on the unusually champagne-coloured carpet (the first time the carpet hasn’t been trademark red since 1961) and asking ‘what have I seen them in before?’ You’re not alone…
A queen of the big screen and big entrance, best supporting actress nominee Angela Bassett was regal in purple Hollywood glamour. Once you’ve seen her as the stoic matriarch Queen Ramona in Wakanda Forever, track down 1993’s What’s Love Got To Do With It for her embodiment of the one and only Tina Turner.
In another biopic, Ana de Armas this year made history as the first Cuban actress to be nominated for best actress for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe in Blonde. De Armas has talked of the endless hours she spent studying the icon simultaneously singing, dancing and acting in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She became so familiar with Monroe, De Armas could even guide the makeup artist’s hand to the most accurate spot for her beauty mark each morning. Catch her past work in the 2021 Bond film, No Time To Die.
Also portraying an icon of that era, Austin Butler still hasn’t quite lost Elvis’s elocution. With Aussie Baz Luhrmann’s vision scooping him a Golden Globe, the role garnered him a best actor Oscar nomination too. On the night, he was just pipped to the post by the comeback everyone was rooting for, Brendan Fraser in The Whale.
We’d also never say no to a very young Fraser in our 90's favourites George Of The Jungle or The Mummy.
Everything Everywhere All At Once was expected to clean up, with a massive eleven nominations - the biggest potential sweep since Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King won all of its eleven in 2003. It won seven awards including best picture and stars Stephanie Hsu, who you may have seen in The Marvellous Mrs Maisel, alongside protagonist Evelyn Wang played by Michelle Yeoh. We plan to spend a weekend delving into Yeoh’s back catalogue, with roles ranging from geisha to Bond girl, before catching the role that saw her make history as the first Asian actor to win best actress.
Now, pass the popcorn while we finally get around to watching some of these finalists.
