9 Items We Didn’t Know Were ‘More Sustainable’

Part of our Considered edit.

Sometimes ya look in the Considered shop on site and think, “Wait, THOSE are better for the environment/ people/ society in general??” It may surprise a layperson like me, but it doesn’t surprise Alexandra Peters, THE ICONIC’s Sustainability & Ethical Sourcing Coordinator. The gatekeeper of every item tagged with a sustainability credential in THE ICONIC’s offering, Alex intimately knows the criteria and rigorously validates every item. She knows. her. stuff.

We asked her why these 9 surprising items made the cut, and how they’re making a difference. Because hey, it feels good to shop better...

1. Air Fast 7/8 Running Tights
“These tights were made from a bluesign® approved fabric. bluesign® enables brands to find or test that fabrics, including the raw materials and dyes, are free from harmful chemicals.“

2. Kleen Kanteen 27oz Reflect Bottle
“Whilst using a reusable bottle fights single-use plastic, this item actually made it into Considered because the brand is a certified B Corp. A ‘B Corp’ is a business that is making a certified commitment to balance profit with purpose, by considering the impact of their decisions on their workers, customers, suppliers, community, and the environment. Patagonia, Outland Denim & VEJA are also certified B Corps.”

3. Fjallraven Re-Kanken Bag
“Just as colourful as the original Kanken, the Re-Kanken is made from recycled plastic bottles, keeping waste out of the oceans.”

4. Converse Unisex Chuck Taylor All Star 70 Hi Top
“Surprised? Converse is innovating with sustainable materials, using recycled polyester or organic cotton canvas for some Chucks. This pair is made from organic cotton, meaning no pesticides, fertilisers or genetically engineered seeds were used to grow the cotton crops.”

5. The Beach People Upcycled Denim Kimono
“This kimono is made from denim scraps which have been re-woven into a recycled cotton material. This saves offcuts and waste from landfill.”

6. Timberland Nellie Chukka Double Waterproof Boots
“Timberland is Leather Working Group certified. Leather from certified tanneries is manufactured with lower environmental impacts, including less water & energy usage. Good news: we’ve just joined this certification too!”

7. Manning Cartell Open Season Leather Mini
“Manning Cartell uses vegetable tanned leather, which also means the patina changes over time in a different way to chrome tanned leather. A unique touch.”

8. Levi's 502 Regular Taper Jeans
“Being part of Considered edit could also mean that the product is associated with a community benefit, for example, the brand might be making charitable donations. Levi’s annually donates more than 1% of its profit to the Levi’s Strauss Foundation who in turn support a whole range of worthy causes.”

9. Yuki Threads Brooklyn Bib & Brace
“Great news is, most Yuki Threads items are made from recycled polyester and they also donate more than 1% of their profit, in this case to support environmental charities.”
