Ralph Lauren started a necktie line under the label Polo in 1967 while working for tie manufacturer, Beau Brummel. Drawing on his interests in sports, the ties were wide and crafted from high-end fabrications. In its first year of business, over $500,000 worth of ties were sold to some of the most prestigious menswear stores including Neiman Marcus and Bloomingdales. The tie grew into a whole industry, spanning from clothing to footwear; homeware to accessories, beauty and fragrances.
