Clarks Originals was born in the Somerset village of Street in 1825 when James Clark was busy working at a tannery owned by his brother, Cyrus, and had an idea: to manufacture slippers from the sheepskin off-cuts and cut-offs. The sheepskin slipper, named the ‘Brown Petersburg’, was a huge success, and within years of its launch sales were averaging 1000 pairs a month.
It wasn’t until James’ youngest son, William took reins of the business in the early 1860s that the Clarks Originals manufacturing process was modernised with the introduction of the factory system and an investment in the Singer sewing machine. Clarks went on to launch the Hygienic range, an innovation that is still the bedrock of Clark’s reputation.
In decades to come, with increased production and the introduction of new materials and trademark technology, Clarks Originals became one of the best-known names in footwear. The Desert Boot, designed by Nathan Clark, for example, made its debut in 1950 and has since become a global icon.
