Founded in 1969 by Doug “Claw” Warbrick and Brian “Sing Ding” Singer, Rip Curl was born as a response to a hardy breed of surfer who gravitated to the seaside town of Torquay, home of some of the most challenging waves in Australia. The brand’s roots began in surf board production, however after spotting a gap in the market of cold-water wear, Rip Curl introduced wetsuits to its range, investing in a pre-World War II sewing machine, cutting out the rubber on the floor and handing over the pieces to an over-worked machinist.
With innovation and enthusiasm overshadowing technical expertise and quality, the pair’s interaction with surfers is what led Rip Curl to become the famed surf brand it is today. The market leaders in surfing wetsuits for almost forty five years, the brand’s utilisation of advanced technologies has set the standard for wetsuits of the future. Now designing, distributing and producing a range of highly innovative clothing, surfboards, wetsuits, watches, apparel and accessories in over 60 countries around the globe, Rip Curl stays true to its simple objective of living The Search and arming its wearers with the best gear possible.
